The project
Year: 2012–2013.
Project: Upper Zakum South Island.
Country: Abu Dhabi.
Contractor: NMDC.
Client: ADNOC.

Background
NMDC was required to construct four oil islands at the Zakum site: two protected with Xbloc® units and two with ACCROPODE™ II units. CLAS inspectors provided full-time assistance to NMDC throughout the construction works.
ACCROPODE™ is a registered trademark belonging to the ARTELIA Group, and Xbloc® is a registered trademark belonging to DMC. These companies are in no way affiliated with CLAS.
Thanks to this total independence from license holders, CLAS was able to provide fully impartial expertise and certification, with no risk of conflict of interest. This neutrality made it possible to strictly apply our control methods, objectively assess placement quality, and ensure the reliability of the structures built on the Zakum islands.
key figures
- Zakum South Island: 30,000 Xbloc® units of 3 m³.

Le rôle de la société CLAS
IDMer, now CLAS, acted as an independent consultant with the following assignments:
train all personnel in Xbloc®-specific safety procedures,
train placement teams,
ensure the technical interface between the contractor and DMC,
establish the certification procedures and implement them,
issue the certification documents.

Result
All four structures were delivered on schedule and accepted without reservations. The breakwaters are certified CLASS A, and the certification files prepared by IDMer (now CLAS) were included in the as-built documentation.
