Background

NMDC was required to construct four oil islands on the Zakum site: two protected with Xbloc® and two with ACCROPODE™ II. CLAS inspectors provided full-time assistance to NMDC throughout the construction works.

ACCROPODE™ is a registered trademark owned by the ARTELIA Group, and Xbloc® is a registered trademark owned by DMC. These companies are in no way affiliated with CLAS.

Thanks to this complete independence from license holders, CLAS was able to deliver fully impartial expertise and certification, with no risk of conflict of interest. This neutrality made it possible to strictly apply our control methods, objectively assess installation quality, and ensure the reliability of the structures built on the Zakum islands.

Role of CLAS

I

IDMer, which later became CLAS, acted as an independent consultant with the following assignments:

  • Training all personnel in ACCROPODE™ II–specific safety procedures,

  • Training installation teams,

  • Ensuring the technical interface between the contractor and CLI,

  • Establishing certification procedures and implementing them,

  • Issuing the certification documentation.

Result

All four structures were delivered on schedule and accepted without reservations.
The breakwaters were certified CLASS A, and the certification files prepared by IDMer (now CLAS) were included in the as-built documentation (DOE).
