The project
YEAR: 2014–2015
PROJECT: Constanta Breakwater, Romania
COMPANY: Van Oord
CLIENT: Romanian Government

Background
Van Oord was tasked with constructing the extension of the breakwater protecting the Port of Constanta. The first row of ACCROPODE™ II units was located at a depth of 19 metres. Underwater visibility was limited, and winter conditions were particularly challenging. CLAS provided its expertise to guarantee the quality and safety of the installation despite these constraints.
ACCROPODE™ is a registered trademark owned by the ARTELIA group, which is in no way affiliated with CLAS.
Thanks to its independence, CLAS was able to deploy its diver-assisted installation methods, ensuring significantly superior interlocking quality and a higher execution rate than any alternative technical solution promoted by the licence seller.
Key figures
- 7,000 ACCROPODE™ II units of 3 m³
8,500 ACCROPODE™ II units of 9 m³
1,000 ACCROPODE™ II units of 12 m³

Role of CLAS
CLAS intervened as an independent consultant with the following assignments:
Training all personnel in ACCROPODE™ II–specific safety procedures,
Training the ACCROPODE™ II installation teams,
Ensuring the interface between the contractor and CLI,
Establishing inspection procedures and implementing them,
Issuing the quality certification documents for the ACCROPODE™ II armour layer.
ACCROPODE™ is a registered trademark owned by the ARTELIA group, which is in no way affiliated with CLAS.
This independence guarantees CLAS a neutral position, allowing for a fully objective certification process, free of any conflict of interest, while applying our diver-assisted installation methods.
It ensures superior interlocking quality and higher execution efficiency compared with the alternative technical solutions proposed by the licence holder.

Result
The project was delivered on schedule and without reservations at acceptance.
The breakwater was certified CLASS A, and the certification file was included in the as-built documentation (DOE).
