Le projet
YEAR: 2022–2023
PROJECT: Cap Sicié Breakwater
COMPANY: OCELIAN
CLIENT: Toulon Provence Méditerranée Metropolis

Background
OCELIAN (formerly VCMF) was tasked with reconstructing the protective breakwater of the Cap Sicié facility in southern France. The contractor chose to use the BS1 block, which is royalty-free, to replace ACCROPODE™ units that were broken or non-compliant, and called upon the expertise of CLAS to provide support throughout the project.
This collaboration made it possible to ensure technical compliance and construction quality, while optimising execution schedules.
ACCROPODE™ is a registered trademark owned by the ARTELIA group, which is in no way affiliated with CLAS.
The full independence of CLAS from the licence seller was a determining factor: it guaranteed an objective expert assessment of the actual condition of the units, evaluating without any conflict of interest which blocks could be reused and which needed to be replaced.
This neutrality ensured a reliable diagnosis and a reconstruction fully compliant with stability and durability requirements, without unnecessary expenditure.
Key figures
- More than 1,000 ACCROPODE™ units were dismantled and reinstalled, with the replacement of broken units by BS1 blocks, which offer the same technical characteristics, geometry, and performance.

Role of CLAS
The mission entrusted to CLAS covered the entire process:
Expert assessment of the armour layer prior to dismantling,
Assistance to VCMF by CLAS diver teams during the dismantling of the existing ACCROPODE™ units,
Preparation of installation layouts for the reused ACCROPODE™ units and for the BS1 blocks added to replace the broken units,
Safety training for VCMF personnel,
Real-time supervision of the construction works and optimisation of production,
Risk assessment of the existing sections of the breakwater supporting the new construction.

Result
The structure was delivered on schedule, without reservations at acceptance.
