The ACCROPODE ™ II differs from the first generation ACCROPODE ™ by eliminating the anvils and reducing the concrete thickness between the legs.

From experience we have found that this new design makes it a little easier to install but also probably more fragile than the first generation ACCROPODE ™. In case of movement, it will more easily tend to break at the level of the legs. The nesting of this block must therefore be perfect to avoid any risk of movement after installation.

INSTALLING THE ACCROPODE ™ II BLOCK

 

The relative fragility of this block at the level of the legs, imposes a perfect interlocking which will prevent any movement after installation. Contacts with lower row ACCROPODE ™ IIs must be made with solid contact. The main obstacle to this good interlocking is due to the hooking of the ACCROPODE ™ II on the riprap of the sub-layer which stops movement down the block. The only way to get over this constant problem is to visually ensure that the block is in its final interlocking position. In about 40% of cases, a natural installation will lead to poor interlocking and the ACCROPODE ™ II thus installed will still have the possibility of further descending under the action of its weight and / or the sea.

 

Changing the orientation of the blocks does not eliminate this problem. Only a visual inspection of each block as it is placed between the two ACCROPODE ™ II of the lower row allows this, subject to mastering the principle of interlocking and the inspection procedures.

Underwater the contacts with the lower row are well established. There are no contact faults.

Close to the surface there is always a strong interlocking of the blocks with firm support on the ACCROPODE ™ II of the lower row and a strong locking by the ACCROPODE ™ II of the upper row.

On and under water the orientations of the blocks are varied. No ACCROPODE ™ II can descend or oscillate. There are no holes. There is no off-profile ACCROPODE ™ II.

Possible origin

 

Failure of the underlayer, insufficient training of installation teams, installation error, ineffective installation control.

 

Risk

 

An ACCROPODE ™ II out of profile can be extracted by a strong swell. In its fall it risks breaking the ACCROPODE ™ II below and its extraction will cause a large hole. A single ACCROPODE ™ II out of profile which is extracted can initiate unraveling of the shell in the affected area and lead to a major disorder.

 

Required action

 

Disassemble the area and correctly interlock the ACCROPODE ™ II. If the origin of the nonconformity is a defect in the underlayment, the underlayment must be adjusted before reinstalling the ACCROPODE ™ II.

Column mounting is not indicated as a non-compliance in the technical reference published by the license vendor. The standard mentions respect for the diamond mesh and tolerates occasional deviations. However, we have found that the ACCROPODE ™ II placed in column produce movement and breakage and needs to be corrected. That’s why we mention it.

 

 

Possible origin

 

The technical repository of the license vendor authorizes punctual non-compliance with the installation mesh and this favors the appearance of this type of problem. However it is also indicated that the ACCROPODE ™ II must be interlocked between them and not have freedom of movement. The placement of ACCROPODE ™ II in columns which have freedom of movement is attributable to insufficient training of the installation teams, an installation error, inefficient installation control.

 

Risk

 

ACCROPODE ™ II mounted in columns are generally unstable and do not have the right contacts with the lower row. They are generally not properly blocked by ACCROPODE ™ II on higher ranks. They will move and probably shatter. If they do break the area will start to unravel and will need to be rebuilt.

 

Required action

 

Normally the area mounted in columns should be dismantled and these ACCROPODE ™ II correctly positioned respecting the installation mesh. CLAS has the know-how that allows this type of non-compliance to be resolved without dismantling the ACCROPODE ™ II above, in the majority of cases.

Possible origin

 

A poorly interlocked ACCROPODE ™ II generally got caught in a rock on the slope and did not descend to its final position. This concerns approximately 40% of ACCROPODE ™ II placed “naturally" on the "target position".

The cause is attributable to insufficient training of placing teams, an installation error, ineffective installation control.

 

Risk

Poorly interlocked ACCROPODE ™ IIs are unstable and do not have the right supports between them. They will move and possibly break. If they do break the area will start to unravel and will need to be rebuilt.


Required action

Normally the area should be dismantled and these ACCROPODE ™ II correctly positioned respecting the laying mesh and the strong supports with the ACCROPODE ™ II of the lower row. CLAS has the know-how which allows this type of non-compliance to be resolved without dismantling the ACCROPODE ™ II above in the majority of cases.

 

 

ACCROPODE ™ II broken

Possible origin

 

The quality of the concrete should be checked first. If the quality of the concrete is not in question, the origin is then related to movement of the ACCROPODE ™ II due to poor interlocking during installation. The cause is then attributable to the insufficient training of the installation teams, an installation error, the ineffective installation control.

 

Risk

 

When broken ACCROPODE ™ II no longer effectively participates in interlocking, the area begins to unravel and will need to be reconstructed.

 

Required action

 

The action required depends on the position of the broken ACCROPODE ™ II. For example, an ACCROPODE ™ II of the first row which has been broken by rockfill from the toe stop, but which is properly blocked, should not be replaced. If the broken ACCROPODE ™ II is in the middle of the armour and no longer participates in the interlocking of the area, then the area must be dismantled and the broken ACCROPODE ™ II replaced.

Origin

 

Insufficient training of installation teams, installation error, ineffective installation control.

 

 

Risk

 

The underlayer rocks we see can be split and extracted. The area is likely to move causing ACCROPODE ™ II to break which will then initiate the unraveling of the armour.

 

Required action

 

It depends on the position of the hole. An isolated hole, in an otherwise properly constructed area, can be plugged with a bag of concrete for example, provided that once installed the bag of concrete cannot be extracted. If this is not possible, or if the hole is close to the surface, the area must be dismantled and the ACCROPODE ™ II correctly installed.

This is not considered by the licenser to be a nonconformity, whereas it is for the first generation ACCROPODE ™. However, we have repeatedly observed ACCROPODE ™ II breakages linked to this position which generates interlocking difficulties and movements after installation. That’s why we mention it.

 

Origin

 

The technical reference published by the licensee allows this type of attitude for ACCROPODE ™ II.

 

 

Risk

 

This type of positioning can cause movement and therefore breakage of ACCROPODE ™ II. The ACCROPODE ™ II breakage initiates the gradual unraveling of the armour.

 

Required action

 

When this type of pose is detected, make sure that the interlocking around is perfect and will not allow any movement, otherwise this ACCROPODE ™ II must be adjusted. Usually, the area must be dismantled and the ACCROPODE ™ II replaced. CLAS has the know-how that allows this type of non-compliance to be adjusted without dismantling in the majority of cases.

 

 

EXPECTED PLACEMENT RATE WITH ACCROPODE™II

 

The pace of installation depends on the following factors:

 

- Size of blocks: The bigger the block, the more difficult it is to move and the more it is subject to breakage in the event of an impact.

 

- Placing machines: The hydraulic excavator allows a double laying rate compared to the cable crane, but its use is limited to small blocks, up to approximately 5 m3.

- Quality of the underlayer: an underlayment that does not respect the tolerances and has significant roughness will slow down the laying and limit the possibilities of nesting the blocks.

 

- Quality of the training of the installation team: a good theoretical and practical training which includes training in safety, the ACCROPODE ™ II technique and the gradual increase in the installation rate, lasts about one month. It is not only training, it is learning that obeys pedagogical rules and progression that can only be taught by construction professionals.

- Visibility: good visibility will facilitate visual inspection operations. The operator must be able to see the shell from the front, perpendicular to the slope surface, and receive information on the contact points with the ACCROPODE ™ IIs in the lower row and with the slope. Only a diver can properly carry out these checks. In clear water it is very fast, in dirty water it takes longer and requires extensive learning, especially in safety.

- Installation tools used: There are three ways to install:

 

1 Using divers is the fastest and most reliable system.

The seller of the ACCROPODE ™ II license recently wrote about this:

 

"A diver with camera control to see the nesting of each block is necessary. It is essential that these checks take place regularly, several times a day if necessary. "

2 The POSIBLOC ™ is the system that we consider the slowest and the least reliable because it is based on the theoretical position of the block in X, Y, Z and not on the nesting, which is the opposite to laying rules, which favor nesting without tolerance limits with respect to the target. On the other hand the system shows a virtual image to the operator which is often different from the reality, due to the imprecision of the system.

 

The software uses colors to indicate to the operator whether the block is on target or not. The operator is trained to pose following the correct interlocking and not according to the target. It will therefore rely on the contacts shown by the software, while trying to respect the colors. Unfortunately, the imprecision of the system does not allow us to have a reliable representation of reality:

3 THE ECOSCOPE is an acoustic system which increases the rate of installation in dirty water but cannot be dispensed with a check by diver, because once the block is installed, the image does not allow to appreciate the quality of the contacts with the ACCROPODE ™ II of the lower row, nor the nesting and installation defects.

- Quality and frequency of installation checks: The longer we delay the frequency of checks, the more we are exposed to major dismantling which will seriously penalize production. There's no point in affording the means to install 10 ACCROPODE ™ IIs per hour if you have to dismantle 50% at the end of the day.

More than the hourly pace of installation, it is the frequency and quality of inspections that will allow production objectives to be achieved. Very close checks, by divers, will make it possible to eliminate dismantling by limiting the treatment of installation faults to real-time adjustments.

On the contrary, a multibeam sonar check, after the installation of several rows, will not allow all the installation faults to be seen and will require significant dismantling in the event of an additional check by divers. In the event that only the multibeam would be implemented, the quality of the construction cannot be certified in CLASS A. The durability of the structure cannot be guaranteed.

 

The average production using a wire crane laying with CLAS trained divers is 6 to 8 ACCROPODE ™ II per hour, approved.
